Kate Hudson is running point on court-side style.
On March 19, the 45-year-old actor took her niece and nephew to check out a Lakers game in Los Angeles—and just like her character Running Point character Isla Gordon, Hudson wasn’t playing around when it came to her game day ‘fit.
While her niece, Rio Hudson, was decked out in Lakers gear and unlaced Timberlands, Hudson put a casual spin on Isla’s game-day wardrobe in a brown corduroy set featuring an oversized shirt jacket and wide-leg pants.
Although Hudson’s style is hardly as done up as her on-screen counterpart, she embraced the Netflix series’ “effortful” styling by forgoing sportswear in favor of the matching set, which she further elevated with a pair of black boots and Chanel purse. To round out the look, Hudson opted for a glowy but minimal makeup and pulled her hair into a loose ponytail.
Hudson’s character in Running Point is loosely-based on Lakers owner Jeanie Buss, who is also an executive producer on the Mindy Kaling comedy series. Of course, Buss attended her team’s face-off against the Denver Nugget’s and made a point to pose with Hudson during the game.
Though Isla and Buss may both come from a basketball dynasty, their outfits are completely different. “Jeanie’s a really sort of casual, laid-back California girl, and Isla’s version of it was just very done,” costume designer Salvador Pérez Jr. recently told Glamour.
In the series, which has been officially renewed for a second season on Netflix, Isla is thrust into her leadership position after her brother checks himself into rehab for a drug addiction. Throughout the season, we see her wardrobe evolves from party-girl pieces fashioned into office-siren ensembles to “fabulous” power suits more fitting of a NBA president. Of course, the goal was never to erase Isla’s personal style but “refine” it.
“The rule that we followed is that we never tried to hide her femininity. We embraced it,” costume designer Salvador Pérez Jr. recently told Glamour. “Because it’s a business world, why do women have to dress masculine? Why can’t you wear a fabulous feminine suit in the business world? And we should change the conversation and let women be women and be beautiful and powerful in their femininity.”
“Mindy always uses the word effortful, not effortless,” Pérez continues. “And why not put the effort in? I think that if you go to work dressed as a boss lady, isn’t that going to empower you? Aren’t you going to have a better time if you’re dressed fabulously? Aren’t you going to have more authority when you’re dressed fabulously? And I think that was Kate. Isla had to be in charge and forceful, and people had to respect her. So it was like, make her impeccable.”
Clearly, Kate Hudson’s interpretation of game day coords is much more casual, but no less “effortful.”

“People have gotten very safe and comfortable and casual,” says costume designer Salvador Pérez Jr., “and I want to change it.”
