The Real Meaning Behind ‘Polyester,’ Gen Z’s Favorite New Insult

Every generation creates its own slang for calling someone fake. Boomers had “plastic.” Gen X had “sellout.” Millennials had “basic.” Gen Z has gone with “polyester,” and the insult is more layered than it sounds.

“Polyester” has been making the rounds on TikTok and X this summer as shorthand for anything that looks good from a distance and falls apart up close. The influencer hawking a product they’ve never used, polyester. The carefully staged candid moment, polyester. The aspirational lifestyle that appears to have been built from a checklist of trending signifiers, very polyester. A TikTok of an 18-year-old laying out his dream adult life—penthouse, Bible study, blue light glasses, an AI agent running in the background so he barely has to do anything—was labeled in the comment section by 40,000 people who all agreed: “Polyester lifestyle.”

The word has an interesting origin. Before it became a personality slam, “polyester” described a style of fan-edit video that emerged around October 2025, according to Know Your Meme—aggressively cut clips of characters like Spider-Man, layered over flashing footage and metallic audio, pushed through CapCut until the seams showed.

A Spider-Man edit in that style resurfaced and went viral in summer 2026, and viewers started using “polyester” to describe the format: flashy, frenetic, and fundamentally cheap. The insult didn’t stay in editing circles long. Gaming streamer LowTierGod got tagged “the Polyester Prince” after critics mocked him for selling 100% polyester merch, and from there the word shed its niche origins.

Why Gen Z Is Calling Fake People and Cheap Lifestyles ‘Polyester’

The fabric connection isn’t arbitrary. Polyester has taken years of abuse in online fashion discourse, with younger shoppers loudly purging it from their wardrobes and treating its presence in an expensive garment as a minor betrayal. It looks fine in the store. It falls apart in three months. That’s the whole metaphor.

What separates “polyester” from its predecessors is range. “Slop” calls out low-quality AI content. “NPC” is someone who has no original thoughts. “Industry plant” targets manufactured celebrity. Polyester absorbs all of it and adds a quality judgment on top—something can be sincere and still be polyester if the whole thing feels cheap and disposable.

The irony here is obvious: the more “polyester” gets used as a catch-all, the more generic the word becomes. Which would be so polyester.
