Hollywood besties Anthony Michael Hall and Robert Downey Jr. are teaming up for the first time in nearly 40 years for a new television series called Singularity. While it’s been nine years since The Wrap reported this highly-anticipated (and long overdue) collaboration, DECIDER has a new update directly from Hall himself.
When the legendary actor stopped by DECIDER’s studio to promote his role in Reacher Season 3, we simply had to know how things were coming along with Singularity, an upcoming series that he and Downey Jr. “wrote together.”
According to Hall — who is set to star in the series, while Downey Jr. will direct — they recently pulled in Gwyneth Paltrow‘s husband Brad Falchuk, a television writer, director, and producer who has worked on numerous projects with Ryan Murphy, including Glee, American Horror Story, Scream Queens, and Pose.
“Brilliant guy, really a smart guy. So our hope is that we’re going to set the show up and with Brad’s involvement now,” Hall gushed, before adding, “I love Downey. I love Susan, his wife. They’re like family to me. And yeah, we want to get this series up and running.”
Hall said they had to rework some of the show at one point because they realized how closely it resembled HBO’s Golden Globe-winning series Succession.
“After writing up numerous drafts a couple of years ago, we realized it was kind of shaping up, very accidentally, like Succession,” he explained. “And it was such a big show. So we had to kind of regroup and kind of reconfigure things. And then we brought Brad to the table. And yeah, I’m just excited to be working with those guys. So I’m looking forward to hopefully making that happen.”
Hall added that he “would just love to work with Robert again.”
The longtime friends first met on the set of John Hughes‘ 1985 comedy Weird Science, which will turn 40 this August. That same year, they joined the 1985-1986 cast of Saturday Night Live, making Hall — then 17 — the youngest cast member ever hired for the sketch comedy show.
The last time Hall and Downey Jr. worked together was on a 1988 comedy called Johnny Be Good, which also starred Uma Thurman, Paul Gleeson, and Jennifer Tilly.
“I owe you a few dollars on that one,” Hall said with a laugh when we brought up the sports comedy, which followed aspiring college quarterback Johnny Walker (played by Hall) as big-wig schools used money, girls, and just about anything they could to recruit him to their football teams.
“I just have great memories of shooting that film. Downey refers to it as Johnny B Movie. And I’m like, ‘Screw you, Iron Man,’” Hall joked. “I love it. I have a lot of laughs when I think back on it.”
Until there’s more news to share about Singularity, you can watch Hall and Downey Jr. in Weird Science and Johnny Be Good, both of which are currently streaming on Prime Video.
