Women Who Do This Simple Thing Have Better Sex, Study Finds

Words are powerful. The ones women use for their own genitals—in private, with partners, in their own heads—have a measurable effect on how much pleasure they actually experience. And someone finally studied it.

Researchers from Johannes Gutenberg University and Bar-Ilan University surveyed 457 American women about the words they use to describe their genitals, both in everyday life and during sex, publishing their findings in the journal Sex Roles. They sorted responses into nine categories—anatomical, vulgar, playful or childish, euphemisms, gender identity-related, clitoris-focused, edible, nature-based, and receptacle—then cross-referenced terminology with body image, sexual satisfaction, orgasm frequency, and health behaviors.

The results were interesting, to say the least.

Women Who Use This Word During Sex Report More Orgasms, Study Finds

The women leaning on childish terms—”hoo-ha,” “vajayjay,” “cookie”—reported lower genital self-image, fewer orgasms, and greater interest in cosmetic surgery in that region. Anatomical language users came out with healthier self-perception but not dramatically better sex. The group reporting the most pleasure, the most frequent orgasms, and the strongest interest in receiving oral sex were the ones using “pu—y” during sex. Women who stuck to vague terms like “down there” were essentially unaffected either way.

Women don’t come up with these words on their own. They inherit them — from mothers who said “down there,” from schools that skipped the anatomy lesson, from a culture that has never been comfortable with female anatomy in the first place. A 2024 review in the journal Sexes found sexual shame actively suppresses arousal and desire. Other research links negative genital self-image to sexual distress and depression. The terminology is a symptom of something that was already there.

The researchers noted the findings reflect correlation, not cause. Using “pussy” doesn’t mean orgasms are guaranteed. What the data points to is that women already comfortable using more direct or reclaimed language are also more comfortable in their bodies during sex—and that comfort shows up across the board, from reported pleasure to whether they feel their body needs to be surgically altered.

The vocabulary women absorb around their own bodies—and the terms they grow up learning to use, avoid, or feel ashamed of—leaves a lasting mark. What you call something shapes how you feel about it. In this case, it’s your entire sexuality.
