Marketing insights company Sensor Tower announced today that it acquired Video Game Insights (VGI), a data and market research company. VGI brings its expertise on both PC and console platforms to join with Sensor Tower’s existing data on the mobile gaming scene. VGI will continue to operate as Video Game Insights by Sensor Tower, and all VGI employees will be integrated into the Sensor Tower’s team.
Video Game Insight’s primary data set on the industry has been on Steam, Valve’s PC gaming platform — data including game sales and trends in user behavior. VGI also expanded this year to provide similar data on Xbox and PlayStation. Sensor Tower and VGI combined can offer publishers insights into the gaming market across mobile, PC and console, according to both companies.
Oliver Yeh, Sensor Tower’s CEO told GamesBeat in an interview that the acquisition brings in data that better represents the expansive ecosystem of the video game industry. “This expanded dataset unlocks cross-platform player behavior, engagement and revenue by platform, and trends in retention and monetization. Publishers can now better understand their own performance relative to their competitors’, analyze which titles are performing best on each major platform and refine their development and growth strategies accordingly.
This marks the third such acquisition by Sensor Tower, the company having acquired mobile marketing firm data.ai in 2024 to better understand the mobile gaming scene. According to Yeh, Sensor Tower continued to look for ways to update its products following this acquisition: “Adding PC and Console insights to our mobile gaming data has long been a top request from our customer base. When we met Karl and Harry (CEO and Co-Founder of VGI, respectively), we quickly recognized shared values in how they operated their business – scrappy, innovative, and deeply customer-centric.”
Karl Kontus, VGI’s aforementioned CEO, said in a statement, “We are thrilled to join Sensor Tower and further our goal of providing the industry with a comprehensive view of the gaming ecosystem. The power of our combined datasets provides deeper insights into market trends, competitor strategies, and user preferences, allowing our customers to grow and scale at a faster rate than ever before.”
