From filming Woe’s Hollow scenes in New York’s Minnewaska State Park Preserve to shooting Salt’s Neck scenes in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Severance is majorly expanding its world in Season 2.
And Episode 209, “The After Hours,” keeps the new filming locations coming.
Spoilers for Severance Season 2, Episode 9 ahead.
“The After Hours” features a number of snowy outdoor excursions, a look at the Eagan household, several Lumon shots, a trip to a train station with Burt and Irving, and a return to Damona Birthing Retreat.
So where was Severance Season 2, Episode 9 filmed? Curious about the real-life train station where Burt and Irving shared their special scene? Or where the entrance to Damona Birthing Retreat is? We’ve got answers!
Here are a few standout filming locations for “The After Hours.”
Severance Season 2 Hits The Great Outdoors
Before we dive into specific filming locations, it’s worth noting that per Severance‘s production notes, Season 2 shot in “various new locations in greater New York including Kingston, Beacon, Hudson, Ossining, Utica, Nyack, Long Island, Brooklyn and Palisades Interstate Park, as well as venturing further afield to the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.” With a number of outdoor scenes in Episode 209, several of those locations make appearances.
Where Is Severance Season 2, Episode 9 Filmed? Burt And Irving’s Trip To Utica’s Union Station
During Episode 209, Burt breaks into Irving’s house, reads a handful of notes Irv took pertaining to his Lumon investigation, and tells him (and Radar) to get in the car and go for a ride with him. During their drive, Burt confirms suspicions that he did work for Lumon prior to getting severed, but claimed, “I never hurt anyone, I want you to know that. I drove people places. I didn’t ask what happened to them when they got there.” Irving asked Burt, “Is that what today is?” And for a moment, Burving stans like myself feared the worst.
Rather than drive Irving to Lumon, Mr. Drummond, or another suspicious location in Kier, however, Burt took him to the train station, bought him a one-way ticket, and said, “This line goes as far as you can go. I can’t know where you get off, and you can never come back to Kier. Do you understand?”
Irving questioned if Lumon would come after Burt for helping him escape, but Burt didn’t care. “You asked me why I severed. I liked the idea that I could be innocent again — part of me. But then my innocent part fell in love with you,” Burt explained. As the two went back and forth, flirting with the idea of exploring their feelings for each other as outies and ultimately deciding they couldn’t, they recreated their painfully romantic forehead touching scene from Episode 2 in the train station. UGH!
So where was the backdrop for this heartbreaking scene? Those gorgeous marble pillars are found in Utica’s Union Station in Utica, New York. Per Oneida County’s website, “Union Station was built in 1914 in an historic section of the City of Utica referred to as Bagg’s Square. The station is located in a NY State Economic Development Zone and is listed on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places.” Severance reportedly shut down a portion of Bagg’s Square to film Episode 209 scenes for two days in May 2023, and according to Paul Buckley, film commissioner for Film Utica, the team “spent at least $2 million on the shoot,” which included fake show to keep up the wintry Season 2 vibes.
Damona Birthing Retreat
In the final minutes of the episode, Cobel sneaks Devon and Mark back into Damona Birthing Retreat, stopping at the memorable stone entrance archway to get approval for Cabin 5. That archway is the Mohonk Testimonial Gateway located at Mohonk Preserve in New Paltz, New York. (Fun fact: Severance star John Turturro is a SUNY New Paltz grad!)
Bell Labs, The Eagan Household, And Beyond
Season 2 not only features several stunning shots of Lumon Industries, but we also get an aerial view of the massive building, the white water tower out front, and Jame and Helena’s massive glass home in the distance. As noted in our original Severance filming locations article, the Lumon building is Bell Works, the former Bell Labs building in Holmdel, New Jersey. Though Bell Works is occupied during Severance shoots, per the website, the building is open to the public seven days a week as “a one-of-a kind destination for business and culture, complete with a blossoming ecosystem of technology, traditional offices, retail, dining, hospitality, and much more.”
For those curious, there is really a white water tower outside of Bell Works. However, there doesn’t appear to be a long glass house directly across from it, so stay tuned for more information about the Eagan household. In the meantime, read on to learn more about Severance Season 2, Episode 8 filming locations, and where Season 1 and Season 2 of the series was shot.
