Netflix has officially greenlit a new project to remake the thriller, horror story Cujo from Stephen King.

The novel, which was originally released in 1981, is aout a mother and son duo who become trapped in their car while protecting themselves from a rabid dog. The plot sees the formerly friendly 200-pound St. Bernard turn into a calculating hound that leaves a trail of bodies in its way. The mom and her son are faced with the battle against the oversized rabid dog or risk heatstroke in the hot car. In 1983, King’s novel was adapted into a feature film of the same name. It was directed by Lewis Teague and starred Dee Wallace, Daniel Hugh Kelly and Danny Pintauro. At the time, Cujo achieved $21 million USD at the box office over a $6 million USD budget. Stephen King’s novels have often been in the horror and sci-fi fantasy genre and includes an expansive repertoire that has influenced other films and pop culture moments. His portfolio inspired films like Carrie, The Shining, Shawshank Redemption, Stand By Me, It and It: Chapter Two.

There is another King novel currently in adaptation by Edgar Wright. Set to star Colman Domingo, Glen Powell and Josh Brolin, the upcoming dystopian action thriller The Running Man is coming soon while the recent Mike Flanagan helmed the feel-good apocalyptic story Life of Chuck starring Tom Hiddleston and Chiwetel Ejiofor was recently acquired by Neon after its Toronto Film Festival debut.

Not much is known of the upcoming Cujo film but the classic thriller film will be produced by Roy Lee.
