Lady Gaga is reflecting on her harrowing battle with psychosis.
On Saturday, March 8, the 38-year-old legendary pop star appeared on The New York Times‘ The Interview podcast hosted by David Marchese and Lulu Garcia-Navarro and explained that about five years ago, she was struggling with psychosis.
The singer-songwriter stated, “I had psychosis. I was not deeply in touch with reality for a while. It took me out of life in a big way, and after a lot of years of hard work, I got myself back.”
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, “Psychosis refers to a collection of symptoms that affect the mind, where there has been some loss of contact with reality.”
The “Applause” hitmaker credited her fiancé, entrepreneur Michael Polansky, for recognizing she was not as happy as she could be even after she overcame the psychosis.
“It was a hard time, and it was actually really special when I met my partner because when I met Michael, I was in a much better place when I met him, but I remember him saying to me, pretty early on, ‘I know you could be a lot happier than you are,’” she recounted. “It was really hard for me to hear him say that because I didn’t want him to think that of me. I wanted him to think I was this happy, totally together person, and I wasn’t really yet.”
However, the Grammy Award-winning artist noted that reflecting on this journey is not easy for her.
“It’s something that I have found increasingly harder to talk about. I think I hate feeling defined by it. It’s like a ghost of yourself. That’s what it felt like to me, like something I felt ashamed of,” she confessed.
Gaga added that she believes things do get better and mental health struggles are not something people should be ashamed of.
The “Bad Romance” singer confirmed her engagement to Polansky in July 2024, and the pair reportedly got together in 2020. Earlier this month, she told Access Hollywood she has plans to start a family.
“I really want to be a mom,” the musician told the outlet. “The greatest vision I have is that.”
