Former daytime talk show host Wendy Williams has been removed from her assisted living facility and taken to a hospital.
People reports that on Monday, March 10, the NYPD conducted a wellness check on Williams at her assisted living facility, escorting her out of the building before transporting her in an ambulance to a local hospital “for evaluation.” Per The New York Post, Williams had dropped a note that reportedly read “Help! Wendy!!” out of the window of her fifth-story room at her NYC care facility earlier that morning.
The 60-year-old hosted the popular and juicy daytime talk show The Wendy Williams Show from 2008 until 2021, when she stepped away from the series due to medical issues stemming from lymphedema and Graves’ disease. The following year, Williams was placed under a court-ordered conservatorship after a bank argued that she was a “victim of undue influence and financial exploitation.” In 2023, she was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia and primary progressive aphasia, and her diagnosis was revealed to the public in February of 2024.
In court filings, Williams’s guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, has stated that Williams had “become cognitively impaired, permanently disabled, and incapacitated” from dementia. But in recent months, Williams has been vocal about her desire to terminate her guardianship. On a phone call with popular radio show The Breakfast Club in January, Williams said that she was not cognitively impaired and felt like she was “in prison” living in her care facility. In TMZ Presents: Saving Wendy, an hour-long special released in February, Williams told Harvey Levin that she had only been allowed to leave the building twice in the last month.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Morrissey refuted Williams’s claim, citing Williams’s two recent trips to Florida. “Nobody’s saying that Wendy can’t leave a building, but that has become a thread that people pick up on,” she said. Hours after Williams appeared on The Breakfast Club, Morrissey requested “a new medical evaluation” for Williams, noting that the former talk show host “has now repeatedly stated publicly that she disagrees with her FTD diagnosis.” According to TMZ, Williams was taken to Lennox Hill Hospital on Monday, where she passed the psychiatric evaluation conducted, scoring a 10 out of 10 on the capacity test used to determine whether she was alert and oriented correctly.
According to a social media post from Suzanne Bass, one of the producers of her talk show, Williams is scheduled to make an appearance on ABC’s The View on Friday, which would mark her first daytime appearance since leaving The Wendy Williams Show. “Prepping a very special friend for her appearance @theviewabc to air this Friday. #freewendy,” wrote Bass on Instagram.
