In an awkward moment on Today With Jenna & Friends, Jenna Bush Hager walked back a joke she made to her guest host Dwayne Wade during Monday’s broadcast after realizing how “weird” it sounded.
She and the former NBA player were expressing how excited they felt to be working together on the show when she made the awkward comment.
“Look who’s here, I am so excited!” Bush Hager exclaimed.
Wade said he was likely “more excited” about this opportunity than Bush Hager. “You get to do this all the time, I don’t,” he pointed out.
“I know, but I never get to do it with an NBA superstar,” Bush Hager replied, before adding: “That sounds weird.”
Wade laughed, but the off moment continued as Bush Hager said, “Your wife is here. I didn’t mean it like that. I’ve never gotten to host with somebody like you and Iâm just so thrilled.”
Wade is, in fact, just the third man to guest host Today With Jenna & Friends since Hoda Kotb’s exit from the show in January. Bush Hager has also been joined by Today host Willie Geist and Saturday Nigh Live star Mikey Day. And though his celebrity wife Gabrielle Union was reportedly on set as Bush Hager revealed, she did not make an appearance in front of the camera during Monday’s broadcast.
The former Miami Heat player then joked about his newfound friendship with Bush Hager’s twin sister, Barbara Bush, who leads the NBA’s social responsibility department.
He said he prepared for his new gig as Bush Hager’s guest host by getting a facial, working with a vocal coach, and watching Bush Hager’s past work. “Just all your shows and maybe some other things with you and your sister. You know, me and your sister are best friends,” he told Bush Hager.
“We became besties but it was all about you, it was really to make you jealous,” Wade then joked.
Bush Hager revealed her sister had warned her she was going to “fall in love” with Wade, to which he did not miss a beat as he responded, “I’m part of the family now.”
“You are, you are,” Bush Hager said, then joked with a laugh, “Dwayne Bush. Nobody’s ever called you that before.”
Wade is the latest celebrity guest host to join Bush Hager on the fourth hour of Today. He will be hosting the show this week from March 10 to March 14.
