Pulling off the perfect proposal isn’t easy, and when you’re planning on traveling overseas to pop the question, it can be even more nerve-wracking.
One man has gained viral attention for sharing how he tried to stop the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) from spoiling his own surprise at the airport. In a viral video, TikToker Josh Desantis, or @josh.desantis, shared his tactic.
On the way to Argentina, Desantis wanted to ensure his engagement ring remained a secret from his partner while passing through TSA and customs. To achieve this, he wrapped the ring in a sock and taped a handwritten note to it that read: “This is an engagement ring. If you have to check please be lowkey.”
Gotta stay safe #engagement #tsa #travel #fyp
The video has been viewed over 2 million times since being posted last week, and sparked a serious of responses from commenters. Viewer Maggie Hasrouny said: “As someone who X-rays bags at an airport, we know it’s an engagement ring. Even if you wrap it in 10 layers of socks we can easily see it.”
While others recalled their own experiences. Cookiecoma wrote: “My husband did this too. He put it in a shoe and left a note in the shoe.”
Viewer Emily said: “My fiancée did not do this but luckily the box didn’t get flagged.”
Despite the security concerns, Desantis’ proposal plan was a success. In a follow-up video, he posted footage of the romantic moment he went down on one knee on a scenic pier in Buenos Aires.
“Everything worked out perfect!” he wrote. Interestingly, the ring he proposed with was a $20 replica, as he opted to leave the real engagement ring safely at home. “Buy a replica if you’re going to take it out of the country, gentlemen,” he advised in another post.
When it comes to proposing away from home, wedding site The Knot does have some advice. From packing engagement rings in their carry-on bags instead of checked luggage to keeping the ring in a secure location, such as inside a sock—like some of the TikTokers flagged—to avoid suspicion while passing through security.
To maintain the element of surprise, The Knot also said it is important to follow all TSA rules to minimize the chances of getting stopped and searched. If concerned about a bag check, they suggest using a nondescript, medium-sized box rather than an obvious ring box.
Of course, if things don’t go to plan and the TSA does pull out an engagement ring in front of the recipient, all isn’t lost. One man even got down on one knee in the security check-in line in Nevada. People joked it was “shoes off, rings on!” after the spontaneous proposal a few years ago.
