Bong Joon Ho‘s R-rated Mickey 17 starring a dozen Robert Pattinsons went into the box office opening weekend with optimism. While it came out No. 1 at the domestic box office, it only did so with the sluggish result of $19.1 million USD from 3,807 theaters.

Although Mickey 17 earned the top spot, it is a long way from profitability, given that Warner Bros. spent $118 million USD to produce the original, offbeat dark comedy space odyssey. The film scored a “B” on CinemaScore and a 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. In addition to the production cost Mickey 17 required another $80 million USD to market, which meant that the film would need to earn around $275 million USD to $300 million USD globally. In total, the film brought in $25.4 million USD across 66 territories. When it opened in South Korea last weekend, the film grossed $34.2 million USD overseas and $53.3 million USD worldwide in total.

As well as coming out on top at the domestic box office, the film made history with the first Korean director to debut in the No. 1 spot. Overall, this weekend was down across the board nearly 60% compared to the same weekend last year. Disney and Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World slid down to second place after taking the No. 1 spot for the past three weeks. The film stars Anthony Mackie as the star-spangled Avenger and ended this weekend with $177 million USD domestically and $370.8 million USD worldwide. It remains to be seen how Mickey 17 will continue to fair at the box office.
