In the most recent Thunderbolts trailer, Marvel gives a nod to indie film favorite A24, hinting at film’s multiple connections to the studio’s own cinematic universe. Moving away from its typical trailer structure that includes big sweeping action scenes, this recent teaser is in favor of techno music and title cards spotlighting the film’s stars, artisans and creatives who have worked on A24 films in the past.

The teaser was first revealed by Letterboxd and the “exclusive first look” saw the film’s stars Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan and Julia Louis-Dreyfus dressed in their Marvel gear as Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes a.k.a. the Winter Soldier and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, respectively but also with their A24 acting credits. For Pugh i was Midsommar, Stan — A Different Man and Louis-Dreyfus for You Hurt My Feelings. Even the Marvel logo was given a typical A24 makeover and the teaser continued to feature stylized cards that read from “the editor of Minari,” and “the writer sand directors of Beef.” Other A24 films like The Green Knight and its cinematographer Andrew Droz Palermo as well as Hereditary production designer Grace Yun and Everything Everywhere All At Once composers Son Lux also get a shoutout.

The teaser highlights the creative overlap between MCU and A24. The teaser was created in collaboration with Jake Schreier who said at last year’s Comic Con to Variety, “The goal that Kevin [Feige, president of Marvel Studios] set at the beginning was to go in and try to make this different. If you can imagine a Marvel movie from people who make that kind of work, and imagine where those tones could meet, then I feel like that’s what we hope we’ve made.” Pugh has also said to Empire Magazine that this film is “quite badass indie, A24-feeling assassin movie with Marvel superheroes.” Watch the teaser below and take a look at what A24 had to respond. Thunderbolts releases on May 2.
