The much anticipated match on championship Sunday is in the 285 lbs. weight class. Minnesota’s Gable Steveson dominated the semifinals to stay undefeated and set up a showdown with Penn State’s second-seeded Greg Kerkvliet. Both star seniors are undefeated this season and have their eyes set on a Big Ten Championship and a National Championship in their weight class. Steveson has won both head-to-head matches against Kerkvliet in his career.
There are only three other matches in the Big Ten Championships featuring both of the top two seeds. One features another matchup between the Golden Gophers and Nittany Lions in the 184-pound weight class. Top-seeded Carter Starocci of Penn State faces off with second-seeded Mac McEnelly of the Golden Gophers.
The other showdowns include top-seeded Drake Ayala of Iowa and second-seeded Lucas Byrd of Illinois competing in the 133-pound weight class. Top-seeded Mitchell Mesenbrink from the Nittany Lions and second-seeded Mike Caliendo of the Hawkeyes compete in the 165-pound weight class.
