House lawmakers voted on a party-line basis to censure Democratic Texas Rep. Al Green for repeatedly heckling President Trump during his annual presidential address to a joint session of Congress Tuesday.

In a 224-198 vote, the lower chamber censured Green, 77, formally denouncing him for a breach of decorum during the marquee address. Green is now the 28th lawmaker to have been censured in US history.

He voted present on the censure resolution.

During the speech, Green shouted that the president lacked a mandate and after repeatedly defying warnings not to breach decorum, he was escorted out of the House chamber by the sergeant at arms.

“I heard the speaker when he said that I should cease, I did not, and I did not with intentionality. It was not done out of a burst of emotion,” Green admitted before the House vote. “I was emotional about it, but I did it with intentionality.”

After the censure vote, a group of Democrats stood in the House well and repeatedly defied Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) instructions to clear out so that he could formally censure Green.

Johnson then called the House into recess in response.
