Three female singers took to the stage at the 97th Academy Awards on Sunday, March, to pay tribute to the songs from the James Bond franchise. Lalisa Manoban (also known as LISA of the band Blackpink) sang “Live and Let Die,” Raye sang “Skyfall,” and Doja Cat performed “Diamonds Are Forever.”
Within minutes of the performance, Doja Cat’s name was trending on X (formerly known as Twitter.) While some of the posts were positive, many had harsh critiques of the 29-year-old singer and rapper.
Some critics simply felt that the song was too challenging or not a good fit for Doja’s vocal range. “Doja Cat is a great idea for a Bond tribute but having her sing Shirley Bassey is a losing game,” wrote one user. Another added, “Doja Cat does not have the vocal range to do that song justice tbh.”

Other fans were still more harsh, simply criticizing the “Paint The Town Red” singer as a performer. “Doja Cat that was actually a horrible vocal performance what the fck were you thinking,” wrote one merciless viewer. Another used an expletive-laden GIF from The White Lotus to express how they felt about the performance.

Still, some of the reactions were positive. “Doja Cat is KILLING this cover of Diamonds Are Forever – and the dress is FLAWLESS. #Oscars2025,” wrote one fan. “DOJA CAT DOING DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER IS PERFECT,” wrote another.
One user seemed to just be enjoying the discourse around the performance, using another well-placed GIF to portray their experience.

Several users felt that Raye was the standout performer. One user summed it up by writing, “they could’ve just had raye do the whole thing.”
