From a cat with a hilarious critique of his owner’s food to a socially awkward Corgi, pet videos provide plenty of smiles online.
We also enjoy sharing our readers’ favorite pet videos and pictures and are always looking for new candidates for Newsweek‘s Pet of the Week.
If you think your pet should be next week’s winner, follow the instructions at the end of this article to get involved.
Winner
This week’s Pet of the Week is Bridget, a mixed breed rescue dog who has picked up a brilliant skill—helping her owner open the door when she has her hands full with firewood.
Owner Larry Lipscomb from Marion, Virginia, filmed the moment Bridget opened the door for his wife, a skill she learned quickly.
“She quickly learned how to open the door so whenever she was let out, she would let herself back in along with the weather,” Lipscomb told Newsweek. “My wife said, ‘We have to teach her to shut the door.’ She was taught in a day. Sometimes, when she is out, she will return now and shut the door on her own.”
The skill means that eager-to-please Bridget is particularly helpful when her owners have their hands full, often opening the door for them without prompting.
“She just did it spontaneously for me as well, had my arms full and she opened it and shut it behind me with no command,” Lipscomb said. “I think she is very smart, but we are not dog trainers.”
Finalists
Our first finalist this week is Gail’s adopted dog Lita who came to her in a moment of heartbreak after she lost her previous beloved rescue dog.
Determined to have a dog in her life, she arranged to take Lita in. The next morning, the pup was dropped off at her house.
“She is my life,” Gail told Newsweek. “I cook for her; we walk 3 or 4 times a day and she sleeps with me.”
Our next finalist is Journey, a cat who owner Deanna Culver says is the perfect companion.
“Journey is very sweet, hardly ever gets upset, is gentle even if momma is trimming his nails,” Culver told Newsweek.
Playful and affectionate, Journey loves giving kisses and enjoys time indoors. Even with the patio door open, he knows not to go outside—thanks to early lessons from his mom.
“Momma has mentioned numerous times when he was little that it’s unsafe outdoors if he’s an indoor cat,” Culver added.
Last, but not least this week, is calico cat Kali who lives with owner Marla Linde, a speech and language therapist.
“I talk to her all the time,” Linde told Newsweek, and in return, her cat has developed an impressive vocabulary and a playful, intelligent personality.
She knows how to play fetch, hide and seek, and even “I see you,” where she sneaks up like in a game of peekaboo. She signals when she wants water or a treat and can sit on command. Most impressively, “she’ll jump in the air to give you a high five!” Linde added.
