Finding the perfect name for your pet can come with pressure as the label becomes their identity and something owners will use for the rest of the pet’s life.
People might spend hours debating the best fit. Pet parents might take into consideration the animal’s physical characteristics or personality. Sometimes, pop culture references, food and nature can inspire names. But despite names coming from far and wide, a few popular ones rise to the top and become the most common among pets.
Spot Pet Insurance recently shared the top 50 male and female pet names from 2024. The insurance company based the list on new pets registered with the company from January to December 2024. A representative from the company told Newsweek that Spot Pet Insurance could not share the total number of pets registered.
The data found that owners typically fall into two categories when naming their pets: unique and classic.
The most common name among pets registered with Spot Pet Insurance was Luna with 3,449 animals reported. Bella came next with 2,245 owners registering the name, followed by 1,762 for Milo.
The name Your Pet entered the list for both males and females, 694 and 590, but the description said this is a “placeholder for the actual name chosen.”
The following two lists show the top 50 pet names divided between males (left) and females (right). The number associated with each is the total amount of pets registered with Spot Pet Insurance with the name.

Many of these common names ranked similarly in the American Kennel Club’s list ofmost popular pet names in 2024, which is based on the club’s registration statistics and partner enrollments.
The American Kennel Club article said that Luna reclaimed the title for the top female name, but the surprise came for male names. Milo topped the list, making a jump from fifth place in 2023. Last year’s top male name, Max, moved to second, which is where it also landed for Spot Pet Insurance.
