A tiny dog found abandoned and wandering the streets has become a local and online celebrity since finding a loving home.
Hannah and her wife V adopted crossbreed Squeem in December 2024, on one condition—”that we make him a social media account so the shelter employees could keep up with him.”
She explained to Newsweek: “From what we’ve been told he was found wandering the streets, covered in dirt, and a good Samaritan found him and brought him in.
“All he did was shake.”
Squeem, who is fully grown but weighs just 2 pounds, was brought to the Oregon Humane Society and then on to a foster home, where he “quickly became a staff favorite, and was almost always in the arms or the pocket of a staff member.”
And when a friend of the couple sent a picture of Squeem to Hannah, “my wife and I quickly fell in love and we knew we had to bring him home.”
Since then, Hannah and V have been true to their word, and set up TikTok account @hellosqueem, where they regularly share updates on his new life, with many videos racking up hundreds of thousands of views.
One slideshow video, posted on December 23 last year, showed how much love the shelter employees still have for their former resident, as Hannah posted some of the many photos the couple have received since adopting the pup.
Boasting almost one million views, the slideshow shows the minuscule pup during his time at the shelter: dressed in brightly-colored sweaters, resting on colorful, warm blankets, and surrounded by toys—many of them bigger than him.
“We adopted this guy from a local shelter,” Hannah explained over the video, describing him in a caption as a “local celebrity and former stray.”
“He was everyone’s favorite. These are all pictures that were sent to us by staff after he came home with us!”
They had initially been told the tiny pup was extremely quiet, calm and a picky eater—but very soon after being adopted and becoming an adored pet, the couple learned this was far from the truth.
“He is so funny. He has the silliest grumbliest bark, he gets excited and does circles all the time,” Hannah told Newsweek, adding that he’s become best friends with their other dog. “We love him so much.”
TikTok users, too, quickly fell in love with Squeem, with the slideshow viewed almost one million times. One viewer wrote simply: “I’m obsessed.”
“I’m so happy this little dog found a forever home,” another said, as one declared in all-caps: “SCREAMING FOR SQUEEM.”
“You squeam, I squeam, we all squeam for Squeem,” another new fan said, as one called Squeem a “precious baby.”
Hannah explained to Newsweek Squeem was originally believed to be around 6 to 10 years old, but after receiving dental work, they now think their pup is between 4 and five 5.
“The outpouring of love he’s received from TikTok is overwhelming and so heartwarming,” she said.
“We’ve gotten so many messages, ranging from Squeem lookalikes to heartbreaking stories of other small dogs that were loved dearly and have passed, and Squeem is a happy reminder of them.”
Squeem is one of millions of animals who enter shelters across the U.S. each year: 3.1 million dogs and 3.2 million cats become shelter residents annually, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
“I get updates from my friend working at the shelter about how the staff keeps up with Squeem on social media and like to check in on how he’s doing,” Hannah said.
“We’ve gotten messages and pictures from staff as well as his foster family.”
