Paramount announced this morning that its drama September 5, which is currently up for the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, will make its streaming debut on Paramount+ in the U.S. and Canada on February 25. As is always the case with that streamer, the film’s availability in additional international markets will be announced down the road.

Directed and co-written by Swiss filmmaker Tim Fehlbaum, September 5 examines a decisive moment that forever changed media coverage and continues to impact live news today. Set during the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics, the film follows the ABC Sports broadcasting team who quickly shifted from sports reporting to live coverage of the Israeli athletes taken hostage.

At the heart of the story is Geoff (John Magaro), a young and ambitious producer striving to prove himself to his boss, the legendary TV executive Roone Arledge (Peter Sarsgaard). Together with German interpreter Marianne (Leonie Benesch) and his mentor Marvin Bader (Ben Chaplin), the story focuses on the intricate details of the high-tech broadcast capabilities of the time, juxtaposed against the many lives at stake and the moral decisions that needed to be made against an impossible ticking clock.

Watch on Deadline

Released in December, the film also stars Zinedine Soualem, Georgina Rich, Corey Johnson, Marcus Rutherford, Daniel Adeosun, Benjamin Walker and Ferdinand Dörfler. Also nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama at the 82nd Golden Globes, among other accolades, it’s co-written by Moritz Binder & Fehlbaum and Alex David.

Philipp Trauer, Thomas Wöbke, Fehlbaum, Sean Penn, John Ira Palmer and John Wildermuth produced, with Geoffrey Mason, Constanze Guttmann, Rüdiger Böss and Christian Reitz co-producing, and Martin Moszkowicz and Christoph Müller exec producing.
