Update (February 24, 2025): MAD Architects is putting in the finishing touches to its FENIX project in Rotterdam, Netherlands, confirming that the museum will soon be ready to open its doors to the public.

First announced back in 2023, FENIX was said to be the first art museum dedicated to exploring migration as its central theme. Located on Rotterdam’s historic Katendrecht peninsula, this meticulously restored 16,000-square-meter warehouse historically served as a departure and arrival point for millions of migrants.

In anticipating the opening, MAD Architects has also unveiled an accompanying documentary film, titled “Ma Yansong: Journey to Design the Fenix Tornado”. The video delves into the creative process behind the project, providing unique insights into how architecture intersects with history and human movement. Watch the video below.

FENIX is scheduled to open on May 16, 2025.

Original Story (November 23, 2023): Beijing-based architectural firm, MAD Architects, is expanding its portfolio with the addition of FENIX – a new migration museum.

Set in Rotterdam, Netherlands, the FENIX museum is inspired by the stories of global migration. Spanning 16,000 square meters, the large building is set to open in a landmark location in Rotterdam’s city harbor. The history of the building dates back to 1923 as it was once part of the world’s largest warehouse.

Led by Ma Yansong and MAD Architects, FENIX comes to life through a structure dubbed “Tornado.” Just like the force of nature, the building comes to life through a dynamic riding air structure that ascends from the ground floor and flows out onto a rooftop platform. Aside from being an eye-catching marvel, the design serves as an uplifting symbol for global migrants. The structure will also allow for beautiful views of Rotterdam including the River Mass, Hotel New York and more.

Inside, the museum features gallery spaces across two floors. Comprising the galleries is an assortment of both historical and fine art pieces alongside commissions from global artists. Some of the artists include Paris-based Beya Gille Gacha, the Rotterdam-based artist Efrat Zehavi, Korean artist Chae Eun Rhee and more. But this is just the tip of the iceberg as the museum has already made over 200 acquisitions with illustrate the evolving history of migration.

FENIX is set to open in 2025.
