BBC smash Vigil is heading to the Arctic Circle.

The hit Suranne Jones-starring show, which comes from the makers of Line of Duty, has been greenlit for a third season and will move to a research station in the Arctic where a member of a covert British special forces mission has been shot dead.

Jones’ character Amy Silva and partner DI Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie) will need to catch the killer and diffuse a potential international confrontation, driven by a land-grab for energy and resources in the changing polar climate, with both their careers and relationship on the line.

Penned by Tom Edge, Vigil has been a huge hit for the BBC and the first two seasons aired on Peacock in the States. The show moves precincts each series. The first was on a submarine and the second took to the skies. Vigil has shades of Amazon’s The Rig, which aired first season from an oil rig and the second from an Arctic glacier.

Jones said: “I can’t wait to return to Vigil series three, see our brilliant team in Scotland and work with Rose again. I’m sure it will be a thrill of a ride.”

Edge added: “I’m delighted that Suranne and Rose are returning for a new adventure. In our third season we travel to the frozen north where the world’s great powers are competing to secure advantages as the ice melts.”

Last month, Deadline revealed an ITV heist thriller starring Jones and Jodie Whittaker.

Vigil (6×60’) series three will be made by Line of Duty producer World Productions in association with ITV Studios for the BBC. It is written and created by Edge. The producer is Marcus Wilson, and associate producer is George Aza-Selinger. Executive producers are Jake Lushington for World Productions, Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, and Tom Edge. Vigil‘s international distribution is handled by ITV Studios.
