Mets Favored To Pair Juan Soto With $427 Million Superstar Next Offseason

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is seemingly headed for free agency at the end of the 2025 season. For the third straight offseason, baseball will have a superstar on the open market in free agency. In 2024, it was Shohei Ohtani. This offseason, it was Juan Soto. And next winter, it’ll be Guerrero.

Spotrac predicts the superstar to sign for $427 million, so the market for him will be limited to a few teams.

FanSided’s Christopher Kline recently listed the New York Mets as one of the favorites to land Guerrero when he becomes a free agent. New York could pair Guerrero with superstar Juan Soto in a wild turn of events.

“This offseason was a reminder of how much power Steve Cohen wields as MLB‘s richest owner. When he wants a player, it’s hard to keep the New York Mets out of the driver’s seat,” Kline wrote. “All signs pointed to Juan Soto preferring a reunion in the Bronx. He also plainly liked what Boston and Toronto had to offer. In the end, though, it was Cohen’s checkbook and his accommodating personality that led to Soto signing a historic $765 million contract in Queens.

“Pete Alonso re-signed with the Mets this winter, but he’s probably going to opt out of his contract just in time for Guerrero to slot into the depth chart at first base. The Mets aren’t going to run out of money. After an impressive and unexpected NLCS run, New York is all-in. Soto confirms it. This team will spend the next decade-plus attempting to stack World Series dubs in a highly competitive National League.”

The Mets won’t run out of money. Just because they signed Soto for nearly $800 million this winter doesn’t mean they’re out on Guerrero in 2026.

If the Mets can make this kind of addition, they would be sitting atop the league for the next decade while Guerrero and Soto are both under contract.

It might not seem very likely the Mets will want to part ways with a half-billion dollars for one player a year after signing Soto, but it’s certainly not out of the realm of possibilities.
