The Toronto Blue Jays failed to come to terms on a contract extension with superstar first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. this offseason, so it appears he’s headed to free agency in 2026.
When Guerrero gets there, the list of teams vying for his services will be lengthy.
FanSided’s Christopher Kline recently made a list of potential suitors for Guerrero when he lands in free agency. Surprisingly, Kline tabbed the New York Yankees among the favorites in the early sweepstakes. Guerrero is projected to sign a 12-year, $427 million deal next winter, per Spotrac.
“If the Yankees come with a strong offer to put Guerrero in pinstripes, the 25-year-old is sure to consider it,” Kline wrote. “New York has all the cachet of baseball’s biggest market and a long history of winning. Their 2024 World Series appearance is another feather in an illustrious cap, and it’s proof that New York can win at the highest level. Perhaps they’re a single piece away from glory after losing Juan Soto, a hole Guerrero can patch up.”
The Yankees will very likely be in the running to land Guerrero. That’s just the M.O. of the New York front office and the Yankees in general. When there’s a star on the market, the Steinbrenner family will keep a close eye on them.
Especially one with Guerrero’s franchise-changing ability.
New York could very easily pony up over $500 million to bring Guerrero to the Bronx for the next 12-15 years. Pairing him next to Aaron Judge among other Yankees stars would be quite a spectacle in the Bronx.
