A woman battling the flu has gone viral on TikTok after sharing the unexpected way her family made sure she didn’t feel alone during recuperation.

Instead of keeping their distance, they set up a chair right outside her bedroom and FaceTimed her into dinner—turning what could have been an isolating experience into one filled with laughs and connection. Since the video was posted, it has received over three million views and nearly 650,000 likes.

“My family setting up a chair outside my room when I had the flu and taking turns sitting so I didn’t get lonely,” @daisyjoyjones captioned the video.

Her video quickly sparked a flood of reactions, with many TikTok users stunned by the level of care and support. Some users were confused.

“Y’all don’t just, like, continue with your life when sick?” one person wrote, while another added: “Do you all just lock yourself in the bedroom when sick? My mother would never let me.”

For some, the clip was a bittersweet reminder of their own family dynamics. One commenter wrote: “I wish I had a family like this,” while another joked: “May this kinda family find me in my next life.” Others weren’t so lucky when they got sick.

“When I had the flu, my parents locked the door from outside. I was let out to use the toilet and they would push food and water into my room while wearing a mask,” one user shared.

The video comes during what experts say is the worst flu season in over a decade. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), flu activity is at its highest in years, with more than 24 million cases and approximately 310,000 hospitalizations so far—along with 13,000 deaths.

Many viewers on TikTok could relate to the struggle, with one person commenting in real time: “I have the flu right now, this literally sucks.”

Beyond the health crisis, the TikTok also ignited conversations about different cultural attitudes toward illness. One person simply asked: “I don’t understand why do they do all that? ” while another wrote: “In my family, everyone runs away from you and is constantly washing their hands.”

Despite the mixed reactions, most people agreed that the woman’s family showed a level of love and support that many don’t experience when sick. As one commenter put it, “This WILL be the type of family I raise.”

Newsweek reached out to @daisyjoyjones for comment via TikTok.
