There are winter storm warnings and advisories in place across 21 states, with up to 3 feet of snow expected to hit in some places.

Why It Matters

Freezing temperatures may pose health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups such as infants and older adults. Snow can disrupt travel and create dangerous driving conditions, while winter storms may also cause power outages.

What To Know

There are multiple winter storm warnings in place for different parts of Michigan, Maine, Ohio, Colorado, Washington, Montana, Oregon, West Virginia, Wyoming, Oregon, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and Missouri.

Several of these states also have winter weather advisories in place in certain areas, along with New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, Vermont, Colorado, Washington, Kentucky, Iowa, Montana, Virginia, Alaska, West Virginia, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, Nebraska, South Dakota and Missouri.

Up to 3 feet of snow is forecast across the Tetons, in Wyoming, with winds gusting as high as 40 mph. This is according to the Riverton NWS storm warning in place for the Teton and Gros Ventre mountains, as well as the Salt River and Wyoming ranges, in place until 5 a.m. MST on Tuesday.

Other places, such as areas of Maine, are set to see snow accumulating up to 20 inches, while up to 18 inches of snowfall is expected in the Southern Oregon Cascades.

A winter storm warning means snow, sleet or ice is expected, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

These are issued when “confidence is high that a winter storm will produce heavy snow, sleet or freezing rain and cause significant impacts.”

A winter weather advisory is used to tell people that they should take caution because wintry weather is expected.

“Light amounts of wintry precipitation or patchy blowing snow will cause slick conditions and could affect travel if precautions are not taken,” the NWS says.

What People Are Saying

NWS Riverton warned people that travel is expected to be “very difficult,” saying: “If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.”

NWS Caribou said: “Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions will impact the Monday morning commute.

“A winter storm warning for snow means severe winter weather conditions will make travel extremely dangerous.”

What Happens Next

Winter weather warnings and advisories are all active for different periods of time, with the longest ones in place until Wednesday.
