A new day means a new Wordle, and if you just can’t quite work it out for yourself, then Newsweek is here to give you the nudge you need.

Software engineer Josh Wardle created the game during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to keep himself and his partner occupied. He quickly realized its wider appeal, however, and released Wordle to the public in October 2021. Fast-forward three months later, and The New York Times acquired the brainteaser at a cost that has never been disclosed.

To play the game, users are challenged to guess the daily five-letter word in six tries or fewer, using a color-coded system. Green tiles show the letter is correct and in the right place; yellow tiles show the letter is in the word, though not in the right spot; and gray tiles show the letter is not in the word whatsoever.

Luckily, Wordle isn’t timed, so you are welcome to mull over the answer for as long as you would like.

In an interview with Newsweek in 2022, Wardle said he is “reluctant to tell anybody how they should play,” but offered up this advice: “One thing I will say is that a lot of people tend to think that the game is just about finding those green and gold letters. If you get those, then you theoretically have the information you need, but you don’t want to get too hung up on that.”

In a separate Newsweek interview last year, linguistics expert and Babbel Live teacher Noël Wolf said players should “be strategic with your second guess.”

“As hard as it might seem—especially if you have a few correct letters in your first word—using a completely separate set of letters, where possible, will help eliminate more possibilities in fewer guesses,” Wolf said.

‘Wordle’ #1,337, Answer for Saturday, February 15

The answer to today’s Wordle is “Crook.”

According to Merriam-Webster, as a verb, the term is defined as “bend” or “curve, wind.”

As a noun, it means, “an implement having a bent or hooked form,” “a shepherd’s staff,” “a part of something that is hook-shaped, curved, or bent,” or “a person who engages in fraudulent or criminal practices.”

The adjective definition is “not right,” as in, “unsatisfactory, ” “dishonest, crooked,” “irritable, angry,” or “ill, unwell.”

Way to go if you guessed the word correctly, but not to worry if you didn’t get it this time around. Wordle is released at midnight in your local time zone, which means you’ll get another chance to play on Sunday.

In the meantime, why not try one of these other popular word games?
