Sweeten your Valentine’s Day with a Wordle winning streak thanks to Newsweek‘s helpful clues.

The word-based game, created by software engineer Josh Wardle, exploded onto the scene in October 2021. Three months later, in January 2022, The New York Times acquired it for a sum that’s never been made public. Today, it’s the newspaper’s most popular word game.

In a 2022 interview with Newsweek, Wardle said he initially came up with the idea as a way to entertain himself and his partner during the COVID-19 pandemic but said he’s “not very good at it.”

“[My partner] and I play it on the couch together each morning,” Wardle said at the time. “She will consistently get it in three goes, which is way, way better than I can ever hope to achieve. I normally need at least four or five attempts.”

Wordle‘s simple formula is part of its appeal, where players must figure out the five-letter word in six attempts or fewer. Color-coded tiles help users narrow down letters, with green tiles indicating the letter is in the correct and exact place; yellow tiles indicating the letter is in the word, though not in the right area; and gray tiles indicating the letter is not in today’s word at all.

In October, linguistics expert and Babbel Live teacher Noël Wolf told Newsweek readers that the key to cracking the game is to “familiarize yourself with more words.”

“Expanding your vocabulary for Wordle is particularly useful because the game often includes words that aren’t used in everyday conversation,” she said. “Aside from reading widely to expose yourself to less common words, playing other fun word games like Scrabble, word searches and crossword puzzles can be a great way to widen your vocabulary.”

The answer to today’s Wordle is “Ditty.”

According to Merriam-Webster, the term is defined as “an especially simple and unaffected song.” For example, “Play us a little ditty.”

Take a bow if you managed to solve today’s tricky puzzle correctly. But no worries if you didn’t get it this time around. Wordle is released at midnight in your local time zone, which means you will get another chance to play on Saturday.

While you wait for the next Wordle to be released, why not try one of these other popular brainteasers, like Words with Friends and Typochondria?
