Are you puzzled by today’s Wordle? Newsweek has some tips for you to quickly figure out the tricky term.
Software engineer Josh Wardle came up with the game for him and his partner to enjoy during the COVID-19 pandemic, but soon recognized its wider appeal. It was launched to the public in October 2021, and by January 2022, Wordle had more than two million users—catching the eye of The New York Times, which acquired it for an undisclosed fee.
With countless online games to choose from, Wardle previously credited Wordle‘s format with its continued success.
“There is a reason that every word is five letters long and that you are allowed six attempts to guess it,” he told Newsweek in 2022. “That might seem arbitrary, but, with the prototype version, I tested different word lengths and experimented with the number of tries that players were allowed.”
“Through that process of refinement, I figured out that five letters and six tries was the ideal sweet spot,” Wardle continued. “It’s just limited enough to feel challenging and to make you think, but most of the time people still manage to solve it. So, you feel a real sense of accomplishment.”
In the game, players must attempt to guess the daily five-letter word using a color-coded system. Green tiles mean the letter is correct and in the correct place; yellow tiles mean the letter is in the word, though not in the right spot; and gray tiles mean the letter is not in the word at all.
