Universal Pictures has released the full trailer for its highly anticipated live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon. Directed by Dean DeBlois, who helmed the beloved 2010 animated classic, the adaptation promises to enrich the story with deeper character dynamics, expanded mythology and stunning live-action visuals.
Mason Thames takes on the role of Hiccup alongside Nico Parker as Astrid, with a supporting cast that includes Gerard Butler, Nick Frost and Julian Dennison. Butler reprises his role as Stoick the Vast, providing a direct connection between the original animated film and its live-action reimagining.
Discussing the remake, DeBlois highlighted the opportunity to explore the characters and world-building on a deeper level. “With the rushed production schedule and limited resources we had for the first DreamWorks film, there were things we had to skip past,” he shared at a trailer unveiling event. He noted that the live-action adaptation allows for a more nuanced approach, offering richer relationships, deeper character development and a more expansive mythology.
One notable update is Astrid’s expanded backstory. “Nico Parker plays Astrid and that ties into the idea that she comes from a different culture,” DeBlois revealed, hinting at new layers to her character that will set this adaptation apart from the original.
Fans can reunite with Hiccup and Toothless when the film soars into theaters on June 13. Watch the full trailer above.
