Ronin, the big gaming blockchain, is now permissionless, opening its ecosystem to all developers. This shift paves the way for a surge in new games, decentralized applications (dApps), and DeFi projects on the network, said Ronin creator Sky Mavis.
For the past four years, Ronin has operated as a curated blockchain, prioritizing high-quality gaming experiences for its active user base. It is an EVM-based blockchain purpose-built for gaming.
With this transition, Ronin is opening its doors to a broader range of builders and verticals, creating new opportunities for users and further cementing its position as the leading gaming blockchain, Sky Mavis said.
Ronin continues to strengthen its position, experiencing strong growth throughout 2024. Daily active addresses saw a 10 times increase, reaching 2.27 million by December and NFT trading volume grew by 134%, totaling $71 million USD, reflecting the surging adoption of the network.
The momentum is already building, with teams like Fishing Frenzy, Nifty Island, Rumble Kongs, Ready Gamers (Sovrun), Pirate Nation, De:Lithe Last Memories, Arena of Faith, Hello Monster, Avarik Saga, Chronos Worlds, Photo Finish, Sunflower Land and NRN Agents preparing to expand onto Ronin.
To support this expansion, Sky Mavis has introduced the Ronin Developer Console, a toolkit designed to simplify deployment and enhance accessibility. With this suite of tools, developers can efficiently kickstart their projects, focus on innovation, and take full advantage of Ronin’s robust infrastructure. Key features and tooling include:
- Streamlined User Accounts & Wallet: Frictionless onboarding with Ronin Waypoint and Ronin Wallet integration for any dApp.
- Simple NFT Collection Listing: Showcase NFTs where gamers and collectors are most active.
- Sponsored Transactions: Drive adoption by covering users’ first transaction.
- In-Game Marketplace & Token Swap SDK: Integrate natively for any game and dApp.
- Fiat-to-Crypto Onramps: Scale faster with smooth, developer-friendly on-ramp solutions.
- Smart Contract Templates: Deploy battle-tested contracts swiftly so you can focus on building innovative experiences.
“Today marks the dawn of Ronin’s golden age. Over the past four years, we’ve cemented our status as the premier gaming chain, and now we’re evolving once again,” said Sky Mavis CEO Trung Nguyen, in a statement.
Nguyen added, “With Open Ronin, we’re accelerating our growth—unlocking more games, DeFi applications, and dApps than ever before. I believe this moment will be studied for years to come. Today, everyone is invited to join us. If you’re building something that will make sense to everyday people, we want you to build it on Ronin. Welcome!”
Towards its permissionless state, Ronin integrated Chainlink’s CCIP to bring the highest level of cross-chain security, enhancing its Ethereum bridge and linking to Coinbase’s Base. This upgrade strengthens interoperability, paving the way for future blockchain connections. All of this is important, as Ronin was hacked in 2022 and thieves took $620 million.
The RON ecosystem expanded from three million to 18 million holders, with listings on Binance and Coinbase. Seventeen new games became available, NFT collections grew five times, Pixels daily active users (DAU) reached 1.3 million, Lumiterra’s NFT collection surpassed $1.65 million in volume, and Forgotten Runiverse logged 1.4 million+ hours played, ranking No. 1 RPG on DappRadar after a two-week open beta.
The Ronin ecosystem is expanding, creating new opportunities for users and developers. With Ronin Wallet, players can access GameFi, DeFi, and a growing suite of dApps, while partnerships like Tama.Meme empower the community to launch AI agents, memecoins, and consumer dApps.
In January, Rumble Kong League, the Web3 basketball game backed by Steph Curry, announced its migration to Ronin; Tama.Meme by Moku, the first fair-launch token platform, went live, enabling instant token creation; a partnership with Virtuals Protocol, and Community Gaming unveiled Forkast, an onchain prediction market, bringing decentralized forecasting to Ronin.
