A Republican congressman has introduced a bill that would authorize President Donald Trump to negotiate the acquisition of Greenland and rename it “Red, White, and Blueland.”
Representative Buddy Carter, who represents Georgia’s 1st Congressional District, has introduced the “Red, White, and Blueland Act of 2025,” which seeks to grant the president congressional approval to initiate negotiations for acquiring the territory, currently under Danish sovereignty.

Greenland holds strategic importance to the United States due to its role in imports and exports, military significance and abundant natural resources. The discussion about a potential acquisition emerged during Trump’s first presidency in 2019, sparking domestic and international debate.
After Trump returned to office, the idea of purchasing Greenland resurfaced with greater intensity. He and Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that the interest was “not a joke,” framing it as part of a broader effort to expand U.S. influence and secure strategic assets globally.

Carter unveiled the new legislation Monday to empower Trump to enter negotiations to “purchase or otherwise acquire” Greenland and rename the island.
“America is back and will soon be bigger than ever with the addition of Red, White, and Blueland,” Carter said in a statement.
“President Trump has correctly identified the purchase of what is now Greenland as a national security priority, and we will proudly welcome its people to join the freest nation to ever exist when our Negotiator-in-Chief inks this monumental deal.”
The legislation directs Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to oversee the implementation of the name change. It mandates that all official government maps and documents refer to Greenland under its new name.

A new poll also shows overwhelming opposition among Greenlanders, with 85 percent rejecting the idea of leaving Denmark to join the U.S. Only 6 percent support the move, while 9 percent remain undecided.
