The loss of a (wo)man’s best friend is devastating. Fortunately, Kelly Ripa has the support of Mark Consuelos as they navigate their dog Chewie’s recent death.
On this morning’s Live with Kelly and Mark, she and Consuelos shared that they were on a plane during the Super Bowl on Sunday evening (Feb. 9). While Consuelos attempted to tune in to the game mid-flight, Ripa found herself watching Alone: Australia, meaning she didn’t catch any of this year’s commercials.
“I’m glad I didn’t, because I probably would have cried, because I’m still not… I won’t get into it… I’m still not over the loss of Chewie, so everything becomes Chewie,” she revealed, noting Budweiser’s “First Delivery” commercial featuring a baby clydesdale.
She and Consuelos broke the news of their dog’s passing at the start of last Wednesday’s (Feb. 5) episode, with the latter lamenting their decision to let her go as “probably one of the toughest things that [they’ve] had to do as a married couple.”
“Thank God that we haven’t had any tragedy befall us like that, but she was just a great part of our life,” Consuelos said of Chewie, who was 17 when she died. “And if it wasn’t for this show, we wouldn’t know Chewie. You adopted her on this show.”
Ripa became emotional on Wednesday’s show, apologizing to viewers and confessing that she “thought [she] got it all out.”
Live fans have been kept in the know about Chewie and the couple’s other dog Lena, both of whom have been the subject of many of the show’s host chats.
Consuelos consoled his wife and co-host on Monday’s show, reminding her that they have “met so many people since last week” who have experienced the same loss, who have said “it’s very normal” to feel this way.
“The only way to get over it is to get through it, I guess,” he continued.
Ripa added, “But they’re still not over it.”
While Consuelos echoed that “they’re not over it,” he assured Ripa that “it’ll get better.”
“I promise,” he said. The show then hit a lighter note, as they introduced guest Scott Foley.
