A video of a cat sprawled out on his back in front of a fire has racked up almost 13 million views on TikTok.
With 1.5 million likes and 26,000 comments, the clip features Boyce, a black-and-white feline, relaxing to the max—almost as if he has just returned home from a hard day at work.
The February 7 video, posted by owner Paul Maddock (@paulmaddock6), has resonated with many viewers, who couldn’t help but laugh at the cat’s very laid-back sprawl, as if he was taking a well-deserved break after working hard.
“Paid the mortgage, gas bill, electricity, water bill, and all my taxes. Now I rest,” said one comment with over 33,000 likes.
Newsweek reached out to @paulmaddock6 for comment via TikTok and could not verify the details of the case.
Another viewer wrote, “Cat sleep like he paid all the bills.”
In the background of the clip showing the content kitty, reggae music can be heard. It’s a genre known to promote relaxation by lowering cortisol levels and reducing stress.
A third commenter observed, “He’s taking that reggae music SERIOUSLY,” while another wrote, “Reggae proven to lift mood.”
Other users praised Maddock because Boyce’s sleeping position suggests he feels “incredibly comfortable and safe,” according to pet food company Purina.
“A cat sleeping like this, belly free and open… is the most secure feeling she can get. Congrats to the owner… you are doing everything right,” said one comment, which has 62,700 likes.
“That’s the pose of 100% trust,” added another user.
Indeed, Purina’s website says cats in the wild won’t sleep with their belly up because that makes them “extremely vulnerable” to potential threats. Another sleeping position that may expose their stomach can resemble acrobatics, which might appear uncomfortable to humans but is actually the opposite for cats.
On average, cats sleep between 13 and 16 hours in a 24-hour period, according to Purina. During that time, they may end up in various positions.
Purina points out different ways cats might sleep and what each position means. For example, some cats fall asleep in a position where their back and front legs point in different directions and their head is twisted around, often looking as if they might wake up with a serious cramp. However, this simply means they are in a deep sleep.
Other common sleeping positions include the “Superman” pose, where they lie flat on the floor with their belly touching it and their paws stretched out, indicating they are extremely relaxed.
If they feel chilly, they may curl up to maximize body warmth or cover their face with a paw—possibly to block light from their eyes and keep their nose warm.
At other times, they may seek extra warmth by tucking themselves into bed or snuggling under a blanket to stay toasty.
