Young Americans really hate AI. These two charts show how much.

There’s one thing uniting America’s warring generations: revulsion toward artificial intelligence.

A new poll released Tuesday by Pew Research Center adds to the evidence that Americans believe AI is a negative force for humanity.

Pew found that 52 percent of American adults were “more concerned than excited” about the increased use of AI in daily life. That’s up from about 38 percent in late 2022, just after the public debut of ChatGPT.

Pew also said that for the first time in its surveys, a majority of American adults under 30 are more concerned than excited about AI.

And it found that a growing share of younger Americans have become believers that AI will kill jobs. (Pollsters at Gallup also have found that young Americans are skeptical of AI.)

Executives in the AI industry and AI boosters including President Donald Trump can’t stop talking about Americans’ sour mood on the technology, but they haven’t figured out clear ways to respond.

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, which makes the Claude chatbot, kicked off a storm on X this weekend by saying the public hates AI partly because he and other people behind the technology haven’t delivered on the major benefits they promised.

Amodei had a suggestion for how AI can win over a skeptical public: “The thing that will work is actually curing cancer,” he wrote.
