After The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie is taking Captain America back to basics.

The Captain America: Brave New World star called the goggles-laden, half-helmet headpiece his “worst nightmare” after Wakanda gifted his character Sam Wilson the blue and white ensemble in the Disney+ show’s finale.

“Because I told them that I was never wearing that s— again, dude,” Mackie told IGN. “That was hard. With the heat, the sweat, the fogged-up glasses, it was impossible. It was called a cowl. It was my worst nightmare. You can’t do anything.”

In Brave New World, premiering Friday, Feb. 14 in Imax, Mackie’s Sam returns to a more classic blue and red Captain America look, reminiscent of Chris Evans‘ version. The hero retains his red-tinted Falcon goggles, but without the constricting cowl.

Mackie previously opened up to Deadline about the reaction to Sam taking on the Captain America shield in the Falcon and Winter Soldier finale and the significance of the hero now being portrayed by a Black actor.

“The response has been overwhelmingly positive,” he said in 2021, adding: “The weight hasn’t really been there. I don’t know why, I felt no pressure whatsoever. More so, it’s just the excitement of people seeing where Marvel is going to take the character.”

Captain America: Brave New World follows Wilson, who finds himself in the middle of an international incident after meeting with newly minted President Ross (Harrison Ford). He must discover the reason behind a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red.
