U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly said that he has spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin in an attempt to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.

Putin “wants to see people stop dying,” Trump told the New York Post in an interview aboard Air Force One.

“I hope it’s fast. Every day people are dying. This war is so bad in Ukraine. I want to end this damn thing,” Trump said in the interview published late Saturday, without disclosing how many times he has spoken with the Russian leader.

Putin launched his all-out invasion of Ukraine three years ago this month. Trump has claimed that he could end the conflict in one day.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Sunday said he could neither confirm nor deny any contacts between Trump and Putin, Russian state news agency TASS reported. The White House has not commented on the Post’s article.Peskov said last week that contacts between Washington and Moscow have intensified.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to meet with U.S. Vice President JD Vance at the Munich Security Conference, which starts on Friday in Germany. Their meeting comes just after Trump proposed to provide Kyiv with security safeguards in exchange for accessing the country’s critical raw materials and mineral reserves.

In the New York Post interview, Trump also said he wants to strike a deal with Iran on its nuclear program. “If we made the deal, Israel wouldn’t bomb them,” Trump said.
