The annual Caribbean Series club tournament continues on Thursday with the third-place game between Puerto Rico and Venezuela.
Venezuela won’t repeat as Caribbean Series champions after an extra-inning semifinal loss. This annual tournament features the winning teams from the domestic leagues in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela and this year for the first time features a team representing Japan.

Venezuela (2-3) rallied against Mexico to force extra innings in its semifinal on Wednesday before losing in 11 innings. Meanwhile, Puerto Rico (2-3) was again shut down by Mexican pitcher David Reyes in its semifinal loss. Puerto Rican league champion Indios de Mayagüez was seeking its first Caribbean Series title since 1992.
Venezuela scored twice in the eighth inning to tie its semifinal against the Dominican Republic, getting an RBI single from Rangel Ravelo and a sacrifice fly from Jose Rondón to tie the game at 3. Ravelo came through again in the 10th with an RBI after Puerto Rico scored in the top half. However, the magic couldn’t last when the team stranded a runner on third in the 11th.
On the Puerto Rican side, Ronnie Williams gave up three runs in the first inning, enough for Mexico to win 3-1 on Wednesday night. Puerto Rico only got five hits, two from Isan Díaz, who drove in the team’s lone run with a seventh-inning single.
The teams met on Monday in the preliminary stage of the tournament, with Venezuela rallying from an early four-run deficit for a 10-5 victory. Tune in on Thursday to find out which of these teams wins third place.
