A mechanic on TikTok explained one key component of a vehicle that most people never check, but probably should.
In a recent video with more than 96,000 views, a user on the Georgia-based platform @royaltyautoservice said that everyone should be checking, or having their shop check, their air filter.
“You need to be checking your cabin air filter, and the reason you need to check it because it will get dirty,” he said.
What Does the Air Filter Do?
Cabin air filters play a crucial role in maintaining air quality inside a vehicle by trapping dust, pollen, dirt and other airborne contaminants before they enter the cabin through the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system.
A clogged filter not only limits airflow, but can also impact the effectiveness of the air conditioning system.
A Simple Fix
Replacing a cabin air filter is an easy and affordable maintenance task that many auto owners overlook.
“If you’re going to a shop, they really should be checking these things and making sure that they’re good for their clients,” the user explained.
“You’ve got to do your due diligence as a vehicle owner and know that somebody’s checking it.”
Failure to replace the filter can lead to several problems—poor airflow, strange noises from the ventilation system and worse.
“In extreme cases, [a dirty filter] will cause the evaporator core to freeze up,” the user said.
“Because there’s not enough airflow going through this, it gets really bad.”
Where to Find Your Cabin Air Filter
Unlike engine air filters, which are generally easy to access, cabin air filters can be located in different areas depending on the make and model of the vehicle.
Owners can check their manuals or do a quick online search to locate the filter in their own car.
“Not all of them are behind your glove box, so be aware,” the user said.
“[…] Some Europeans are super easy. Some of them, it just depends.”
Charcoal vs. Standard Filters
While standard filters do the job of trapping dust and debris, some drivers prefer carbon or charcoal filters, which help reduce odors and filter out harmful pollutants.
“You don’t have to spend a ton of money on these things,” the user said, adding, “Get a good quality one. […] I like the carbon ones.”
Always Check Your Filter
Neglecting your cabin air filter can lead to decreased air quality, reduced HVAC efficiency and even mechanical issues over time.
“If you’re going to a good shop, they’re going to be checking them, obviously,” the user said.
But for car owners who want to take charge of their own vehicle maintenance, checking and replacing the filter is a simple and cost-effective way to keep the air inside the car clean and fresh.
Newsweek reached out to the user on Feb. 4 requesting further comment.
