Are you struggling with today’s Connections puzzle? You’re not alone—it’s a tough one! Luckily, Newsweek has helpful hints to keep your winning streak alive.
Connections was released by The New York Times on June 12, 2023, and is its second-most played game. Josh Wardle‘s Wordle is currently in the top spot.
Last year, Wyna Liu, the Times‘ crossword editor who also helped develop Connections, told Newsweek that creating each puzzle takes time.
“I usually don’t know where a board is going to go,” Liu shared, adding that she consults her notebook and spreadsheet before building each one. “It really does take a long time to fudge things and try different angles.”

How to Play ‘Connections’
A large part of Connections‘ appeal is its simplicity. To start the game, players will be asked to “Create four groups of four!” from a table of 16 words based on a common subject matter. Each group is color-coded to indicate the difficulty level: yellow is considered the easiest, followed by green, then blue, then purple, which is thought to be the most challenging category.
For example, in Tuesday’s puzzle, the words “Buff,” “File,” “Grind” and “Sand” were associated with “Smooth Using Friction.” This was a green category.
There is no time limit to the game, though players only get four guesses before the answers will be revealed. Users will know how many tries they’ve used based on a tracker at the bottom of the brainteaser which reads: “Mistakes remaining.”
There’s also a “Shuffle” button, which may come in handy if you’re feeling stuck.
