  • A Hamptons-based food business has recalled a granola flavor intended for breastfeeding mothers.
  • The product was at risk of Salmonella contamination, the company said.
  • There have been several product recalls recently due to Salmonella risk and the Cyclospora outbreak.

A Montauk-based granola brand has recalled its granola intended for breastfeeding mothers due to a potential risk of Salmonella.

The Hampton Grocer announced in a Friday statement on the Food and Drug Administration’s website that it had recalled its 8-ounce packs of “Lacnola Lactation Granola” because they could be contaminated with Salmonella. Two lots of the product, with expiration dates of October 21, 2026, and February 13, 2027, have been recalled.

The company said in an emailed statement to Business Insider that its ingredient supplier, Food to Live, had notified it that one of their products had tested positive for the bacteria. Salmonella can cause serious and, in some cases, fatal infections, particularly for people with compromised immune systems.

The Hampton Grocer said Food to Live recalled its Organic SuperGreens Powder Mix after it tested positive for Salmonella. It contained organic moringa leaf powder, an ingredient also used in “Lacnola Lactation Granola.” Moringa, a herbal “superfood” plant, is said to be beneficial for breast milk production.

In the announcement on the FDA website, the company urged customers who purchased the granola to dispose of it and contact the place of purchase for a refund. No illnesses have yet been reported in connection with consumption of the granola, it said, but the company has suspended production of the product while investigations are conducted.

The granola was sold on the company’s website and on Amazon. It is no longer visible on either site, but The Hampton Grocer’s 8-ounce granola packs of different flavors are priced at $14.50.

“As a mother of two, I know how jarring it is to receive a recall notice like this,” Samantha Sherman, founder of The Hampton Grocer, said to Business Insider. “Like many woman-owned small businesses, we don’t have the resources of a large corporation, so a recall like this is financially devastating. But our customers’ trust is worth far more than any inventory or sales.”

The recall comes amid a spate of other recent bacterial contaminations. Earlier in August, Taylor Farms issued recalls for packaged items containing jalapeños, such as salsa and guacamole, due to potential Salmonella contamination.

And earlier in July, there was a multi-state Cyclospora outbreak linked to salad-related products, such as iceberg lettuce. Taylor Farms removed all iceberg lettuce from central Mexico from sale in the US.
