Moana 2 is coming to digital platforms tomorrow, which means soon you’ll be able to sail away on a great adventure from the comfort of your couch. Now that’s my kind of adventure!
The follow-up to the popular 2016 animated musical Moana, Moana 2 takes place three years after the events of the first film. Voice actors Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson are back as Moana and Maui, who must embark on a dangerous mission together to save their world as they know it.
Additional voice cast includes Hualālai Chung as Moni, Rose Matafeo as Loto, David Fane as Kele, Awhimai Fraser as Matangi, Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda as Simea, Temuera Morrison as Chief Tui, Nicole Scherzinger as Sina, Rachel House as Gramma Tala, Gerald Faitala Ramsey as Tautai Vasa, and Alan Tudyk as Heihei.
Even though Lin-Manuel Miranda didn’t write the music for this sequel, Moana 2 still soared at the box office, earning over $1 billion worldwide. And the movie’s not done making money yet. Disney is releasing Moana 2 on “premium” video-on-demand tomorrow, meaning you can shell out $30 to buy a digital copy of the film. That… or you could wait for Moana 2 to stream on Disney+. Here’s what we know.
Where to watch Moana 2 on streaming:
According to a report from People, beginning on Tuesday, January 28, Moana 2 will be available to buy digitally on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Vudu, and more. The price may vary depending on which platform you use to purchase the film, but on Amazon Prime the movie costs $29.99 to buy, and $24.99 to rent.
Moana 2 will also be released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday, March 18.
Moana 2 is not yet streaming on any subscription streaming services, but we do expect to see Moana 2 streaming on Disney+ soon.
When will Moana 2 be streaming on Disney Plus?
Moana 2 will likely stream on Disney+ in the next month or so, because it is a Disney movie. All the new Disney theatrical movies end up streaming on Disney+, often about four to six months after opening in theaters. Another recent Disney animated movie, Inside Out 2, was released on premium video-on-demand about two months after opening in theaters, and began streaming on Disney+ about three months after opening in theaters.
If Moana 2 follows a similar release strategy, you may see Moana 2 streaming on Disney+ around late February 2025, about three months after it opened in theaters in late November 2024.
That said, the Inside Out 2 Disney+ release date has not yet officially been announced. This is all guesswork, so take it with a grain of salt. For now, if you want to watch Moana 2 at home, you can buy a digital copy of the movie. And in the meantime, you can stream the first Moana film on Disney+.
