A security guard was shot and killed inside a CVS Pharmacy in Texas Friday night by a suspected shoplifter who allegedly opened fire following a confrontation, according to police.

The guard encountered two shoplifters inside the Dallas store near Main Street just after 11 p.m. when one of them pulled out a gun and fired off the fatal shots before the pair of alleged thieves fled the scene, according to the Dallas Police Department, CBS News Texas reported.

Anthony Egenou, a married father of three, was identified by his family as the victim, the outlet reported.

He was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after the shooting, according to police.

Police have not announced any arrests or identified any suspects.

The victim was employed by a third-party security company that provided an extra set of eyes in the retail store, a spokesperson for CVS told the outlet.

“We’re cooperating with Dallas Police as they investigate the incident that occurred at our Main Street store last night,” Amy Thibault, CVS Health’s lead director of external communications, told The Dallas Morning News.

“The store and pharmacy are open today.”

The retail giant remained closed until 10 a.m. Saturday, unlocking its doors to more than a dozen customers three hours after its usual start time, the local outlet reported.

Some locals who live nearby and shop at the CVS issued concern following the violent incident.

“I will probably not go to the CVS alone,” said Rebekah Montgomery, a downtown Dallas resident who has lived in an apartment building next to the retailer for two years, CBS reported.

“I don’t want to be constantly worried that someone could come in and do that. It’s kind of crazy to think that someone could just go in and shoot someone.”
