Red Sox Reportedly Showed No Interest In $42M Slugger Before Braves Deal

Despite needing to balance their lefty-heavy lineup, the Boston Red Sox reportedly never seriously considered pursuing free agent slugger Jurickson Profar.

The switch-hitting Profar, who has slightly better numbers batting from the right side, reportedly agreed to a three-year, $42 million deal with the Atlanta Braves on Thursday. Profar spent most of his time as an infielder early in his career but primarily played in the outfield over the last four seasons.

After news of the Profar signing broke, MassLive’s Chris Cotillo offered insight into whether the Red Sox pursued the 31-year-old.

“On this one they didn’t show interest, I don’t think,” Cotillo wrote on the X platform.

Profar, who’ll turn 32 in February, is coming off a career season.

Appearing in 158 games for the San Diego Padres, Profar posted career highs in batting average (.280), home runs (24), RBIs (85) and OPS (.839) while tying a personal best with 10 steals.

The Red Sox still need a right-handed bat, and many reports indicate they’re among the favorites to sign free agent infielder Alex Bregman. Boston reportedly also has explored trading for St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado.
