Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos have all failed to get access to America’s “most exclusive” country club in Miami — but they’re hatching new schemes to try to get in.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Kushner and Ivanka Trump have spent years trying to break into Indian Creek Country Club, the century-old, ultra-exclusive Miami institution nicknamed the ‘Billionaire Bunker’ for its 300-acre island of ultrawealthy residents. Despite owning a 1.26-acre property there and getting sponsored for membership by Mary Anne Shula, widow of legendary Dolphins coach Don Shula, only about half the club’s board bothered showing up to the couple’s own housewarming party — a clear signal they weren’t getting in easily.
Bezos, meanwhile, has spent roughly $234 million buying three properties on the island and still hasn’t landed an invitation six months after personally working the room at the club’s February dock party. And even Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon faced an organized petition trying to block his membership bid before he ultimately got in.
But Kushner, for his part, has hit on a radical idea that might help him get in: fix the club’s sewage system.
Specifically, the president’s son-in-law has taken a council seat on Indian Creek Village’s separate governing board and helped broker a deal to fix the island’s aging septic system, which has been leaking waste into Biscayne Bay for years. The compromise includes a new sewage pump station built across from his own home. Meanwhile, Ivanka has been playing golf with members and attending club events.
According to a person familiar with the club’s thinking, the couple’s political and social maneuvering finally has them edging closer to admission.
