Smuggled sword at Senate building sets off fight with police

A man was arrested at a Senate office building after Capitol Police found a homemade sword in his bag, and he fought officers who tried to detain him.

The arrest happened around 1:33 p.m. on Friday, according to a Capitol Police arrest summary.

He faces four charges, including carrying a dangerous weapon, possessing a prohibited weapon, resisting arrest, and assaulting a police officer, Fox 5 DC reported.

During a routine security screening, an officer “observed a sharp object” on an X-ray machine, the arrest summary said.

Officers said they “conducted a secondary hand search, a homemade sword was located inside of the bag,” according to the Capitol Police blotter.

Officers then moved to take the man into custody, but he “started to resist arrest and began to snatch his arm from the Officers.”

“After Suspect was taken into custody, a search of his belongings revealed brass knuckles located in his bag,” the summary states.

The man declined to speak with investigators after being taken into custody.

“While preparing to move the Suspect from prisoner processing to CPEP for a mental evaluation, the Suspect became combative and struck an Officer. The Suspect was transported to the Hospital for an evaluation,” the summary states.

The incident is the latest in a string of weapons arrests at Capitol buildings, Roll Call reported.

At least seven other people were arrested on weapons or ammunition charges at Capitol buildings in 2025, according to Roll Call.

Among those cases, a person was arrested in February 2025 after attempting to enter the Library of Congress carrying brass knuckles, Roll Call reported.
