American Primeval opens with east coast widow Sara Rowell (Betty Gilpin) arriving at real life historic trading post, Fort Bridger, with her young son Devin (Preston Mota). Learning that her guide to California has abandoned her, she leans on the settlement’s head honcho, real explorer Jim Bridger (Shea Whigham), for initial guidance. He suggests that the Rowells employ expert guide Isaac Reed (Taylor Kitsch), but the rugged mountain man turns the mother and son down. The Rowells soon join a wagon team of kindly Mormons, lead by newlyweds Jacob (Dane DeHaan) and Abish Pratt (Saura Lightfoot-Leon). Naturally, their good luck quickly runs out…
