Demi Moore said she wasn’t expecting her 2025 Golden Globes win for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy on Sunday night. Be that as it may, Moore was still prepared with the best speech of the night, and one that arguably shot her to the top of the Oscar race for Best Actress.

“I’ve been doing this a long time, like, over 45 years, and this is the first time I’ve ever won anything as an actor,” Moore said, as she accepted her award for The Substance.

“Thirty years ago, I had a producer tell me that I was a ‘popcorn actress,’ and at that time, I made that mean that this wasn’t something that I was allowed to have,” Moore confessed. “That I could do movies that were successful and made a lot of money, but that I couldn’t be acknowledged. I bought in and I believed that.”

Moore continued, “That corroded me over time, to the point that I thought a few years ago that maybe this was it—maybe I was complete, maybe I’ve done what I was supposed to do. As I was at a low point, I had this magical, bold, courageous, out-of-the-box, absolutely bonkers script come across my desk.”

Moore is referring, of course, to The Substance, an absurd, gross-out body horror flick written and directed by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat, in which Moore plays an aging Hollywood star who uses an experimental black market drug to create a younger, hotter clone of herself (played by Margaret Qualley). It’s a taxing, brave role for the 62-year-old actor, requiring not just nudity, but a whole host of disturbing, horrific prosthetics. But clearly, the big swing paid off.

“The universe told me, ‘You’re not done,’” Moore went on in her speech. “In those moments, where we don’t think we’re smart enough, or pretty enough, or skinny enough, or successful enough, or basically just not enough—I had a woman say to me, ‘Just know, you will never be enough, but you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick.’”

Phew! Unsurprisingly, the crowd burst into enthusiastic cheers when Moore finished her speech. She may not have been expecting the win, but she sure did have that moment ready. From the Brat Pack, to the Oscars. Let’s go Demi!

If that’s not enough to earn Moore—who has three Golden Globe nominations, one Emmy nomination, and now one Golden Globe win—her first-ever Oscar nod, I don’t know what is. Not only will she likely get that Oscar nomination, she might even win. And if she does win, it will be for her performance of one of the most heartbreaking scenes of 2024: The Substance mirror make-up scene.

The Substance is streaming on Mubi.
