The Trump administration’s war on “antifa” has reached activists over their politics, their associations, and even the pamphlets on their shelves as legal experts warn the result will have a “chilling” impact on American dissent.
“The narrative is really important here,” Katie Tomaszewski, a senior legal adviser at the Charity & Security Network, told Rolling Stone. “In Prairieland, [the prosecution is] referring back to the executive order by President Trump. All of it is concerning but looking at the broader effects — it’s chilling protest activity. You’ve effectively stifled civic space.”
The report pointed to the case of Daniel Rolando Sanchez Estrada as a prime example.
Sanchez Estrada wasn’t outside the ICE detention facility near Prairieland, Texas, on July 4, 2025, when a protest against immigration enforcement erupted into gunfire. He also never held a weapon or a firework, but is now serving 30 years in federal prison for relocating a box of magazines.
Sanchez Estrada is one of more than a dozen people swept up in the prosecution that followed the shooting, in which activist Benjamin Song wounded a police officer before fleeing. Song got 100 years while others, including Autumn Hill, drew 30 to 70 after the Justice Department branded them an “antifa cell.”
His three decades rest on a single charge of concealing a document or record. Prosecutors argued that when Sanchez Estrada moved a box of years-old anarchist pamphlets reflecting his partner’s politics, he was hiding evidence. The zines said nothing about the protest or the shooting.
The case leaned on NSPM-7, Trump’s counterterrorism memo, and his order designating “antifa” a domestic terror group, tools critics have charged are now aimed at ordinary political speech.
