CNN’s Pamela Brown was caught off guard by a Democratic congresswoman’s claim about a Republican colleague who’s running for Wisconsin governor.
Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI), who lost her Democratic primary for U.S. Senate last week, appeared Wednesday on “The Situation Room” to discuss this week’s primaries in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and she praised David Crowley, the Milwaukee County executive who won his party’s nomination for governor, but warned that his GOP opponent, Tom Tiffany, had some unusual views.
“Holy smokes, he is so ready to go run a big state like Wisconsin,” Stevens said, “and this Tiffany that he’s running against. I served with him in the House, and he’s a nice guy, but he is kind of narrow, all right, and he’s deeply conservative, and his big priority is wolves. He wants to hunt wolves. I’m not kidding. He’s talked to me about it many times on the House floor.”
“Crowley, on the other hand, is an executive operator, and I think he’s, you know, moving and grooving to this governorship, and it’s amazing,” Stevens added. “Also, 40-year-old Black man, you know, we’re seeing Black men like Donavan McKinney in Michigan win a big primary. This is cool stuff. It’s a good time to be a Democrat.”
Brown looked perplexed by something Stevens had said and circled back to the topic.
“Can I just follow up on the wolves thing?” Brown said. “You said he wants to hunt wolves. Like, are you saying he’s distracted by this priority or what’s the – what’s what’s going on there?”
Stevens indicated that Brown had understood her point.
“I swear to you, it is all this man talks about,” Stevens said. “Listen, I have been to Wisconsin many times, you know, I did a bunch of business there, door-knocking there. By the way, there’s some great small businesses in Milwaukee. I had one of the best hot chocolates in my life; they got this Blue Hour Coffee there, Discourse Coffee, Goddess and the [Baker] Coffee, you know, all the TV people there should go to those small businesses.”
“But I’m telling you,” she added, “Tiffany is not connected to the small businesses and the needs of Wisconsinites, and you can get some other people on your show who will tell you how, I mean, he’s just obsessed with changing the gun laws or the hunting laws to hunt wolves. It’s all he talks about.”
Brown said she hoped to follow up with Tiffany himself.
“Well, he’s welcome to come on the show anytime, and we’ll certainly ask him that question,” Brown said.
